Day 18 and 19: Power to the People

These combination posts have become more frequent as they are more convenient because my I keep trying to squeeze every last bit out of each day so that we can be done with this mutha before February hits. Just think of it kinda like the combination Taco Bell and Pizza Hut…so many great flavors to choose from you don’t know which way to go. That really isn’t the best analogy in the world but there was a connection there somewhere in my head. Yay for Taco Bell!

Currently listening to: Enui – Lyrebird. Great new artist from Melbourne, Australia that I discovered today. I literally listened to every single track of his on Spotify, added them all to playlists and even messaged him to tell him how great these songs are.

Dawn…pretty but not pleasant

This is the way Day 18 begins…with a bang not a wimper! Woke up before my alarm went off to the rumblings of several giant trucks outside the door. It was the friendly neighborhood APS (I think that stands for Arizona Power Service or something similar) power guys making a ruckus in the alley to upgrade our power service several days ahead of schedule, yay for this Phoenix utility company! This prompted me to get dressed quickly snap a photo and get it over to the electrician doing our panel upgrades. He said he could be over the same day to hook all of the breakers in our new boxes and schedule the city inspector to come out and give us the final OK and then APS would come back out and switch our meters (the glass cylinders attached to your power meter) from the old boxes to the new, quite an ordeal but I suppose it’s in the public’s interest to make sure everything is safe.

While the APS guys were installing new transformers the crew arrived to start our backyard wall reconstruction and build a new side wall along the alley to provide more privacy. We also decided to add an additional gate at the back of the driveway for Unit A and to move the current gate from facing the alley to facing the driveway of Unit B. Hopefully the photos will make more sense of it.

Sweet car bro!

So, long story short, they tore down some stuff and started building some new stuff (see photos). Scott and I did some more electical wiring and then the day ended with a very welcome event. I put up a shower curtain, did some cleaning, hooked up a temporary sink in the bathroom, and took a shower in the new tub…it was kinda like that infamous quote from Office Space but different.

This movie changed my life…

So begins Day 19 and the blockwall guys showed up around 7am and knocked this wall out super fast. They moved our gate and install and new one. Now we have the great big wall spanning part of the alleyway. Being that we are in the Arts District I want to find a really great underground local artist to paint a mural on our wall…the quest begins, I’m super excited to find someone and see this thing materialize!

Scott and I did some more electrical stuff, like installing boxes in the walls, hooking up outlets, switches, etc… I also did a HomeDepot run and picked up some cool outdoor LED sconces that were only available at the Laveen location. If you’ve never heard of Laveen, you’re not alone…apparently it’s a city. If you live in Laveen, sorry, you have a very nicely stocked HomeDepot, lots of really quite wonderful chain restaurants, and a housing development I passed called “June Skies” that really inspired me and started my day on the right foot. Thank you Laveen! So I took those sconces and my new diamond cutting blade for my Dremel and carved out a hole in the stucco for the power boxes and put up two of them suckas! Not bad looking (see photo below).

After lots of cleaning and blogging, I’m finally ready for my shower and bedtime. Gotta head out around 6:45am tomorrow. Have I ever awaken at this time before in my entire life…yes once, when I went golfing with my Dad many many moons ago. I wouldn’t recommend waking up at this hour to anyone…it’s really quite awful and makes me realize why I always felt awkward saying “Good Morning” to people, it’s not good! It’s never good! I really hope I don’t have to do it ever again, but in Arizona you gotta get working early to avoid the heat, and it’s not even Summer yet!

  1. I agree with Tab. Also, in Trump’s book “The Art of the Deal” he states when you come to a wall. Go through it, over it, around it but get to the other side. Knowing Trump he probably used nefarious methods to get to the other side since he’s a very reptilian person ( two new words I learned on CNN ). Get to the other side PAUL and keep doing it your way. Love your progress Lets go golfing again.
