Day 7: More Plumbing Issues

Read Time:2 Minute, 42 Second

We’ve got more plumbing issues than Mario and Luigi can handle between the long gap between the filming of Super Mario Bros VIII and Super Mario Bros VIIII.  I know that’s not how Roman Numerals work but there was also never a Super Mario Bros. 8, as far as I know.

Listening to:  Sisters of Mercy – This Corrosion, not only a Goth anthem, but also the anthem of yesterday and today.

Luckily, Scott dropped a tool in the exposed floor of the kitchen in Unit B only to discover the corrosion in the main drainage pipe in the kitchen.  Further investigation revealed, that not only was the pipe severely corroded, but about 5 feet down line it was completely broken off.  This means, in addition to the bathtub in this unit, that it has been draining for who knows how long straight into the earth below the house.  Scott was cursing the home inspector that did the pre-purchase inspection and the previous owner for the severe lack of attention.  I must admit there were a few minutes where I was upset about it, but then it passed and we focused on how to correct the issue.  It took some puzzle-solving, but eventually we formed a game plan and decided which pieces we needed to solve this problem.

After numerous trips to Home Depot we eventually got our pipes glued and in place.  We stuck a hose in the new pipes and, thankfully, no leaks!!  This is an entirely new plumbing system in the house, minus the main pipes buried in the ground leading to the Phoenix waste treatment center somewhere out there.

We started to get the sub-floor reinstalled to put the first new tub in, but it was nearly time to quit for the day.  All in all these plumbing issues have cost us almost two days, but while we were delayed progress was made elsewhere.  The stucco guys came in today and applied the first layer of stucco.  This guy Marcos and his crew were very accomodating and did excellent work thus far.  I’m building my team here in AZ, I still need an affordable drywall guy and an electrician that’s not out to gouge me on a whole house re-wiring.  Tomorrow the stucco will be finished!  Friday tile work begins and Saturday exterior painting!

Lots of people have been marveling at our break-neck pace, but the way we figure it, for every day that we aren’t listed on Airbnb that’s $200+ dollars that we are potentially losing out on.  It’s all about opportunity cost (look it up.)

  1. Love the Mario reference. Since Mario is his first name and they are known as the Mario Brothers, does this mean his name is Mario Mario? Great Sisters of Mercy call back. There are bound to be drawbacks, but keep the eye on the prize.

    1. Thanks Rick! You’re always the perceptive one. Mario Mario is surely his name. Luigi Mario is his brother who is constantly living in his bro’s shadow.
