Day 4: Cleaning, Cleaning, and Cleaning…

Cleaning is without a doubt the worst part of this rehab so far.  I can deal with the lack of sleep, that’s why some person invented caffeine and some other person invented sugar and then a really smart guy threw them both together with some citric acid and called it Rockstar!!  What would I do without you?  On average I clean about two hours per night, piles like the one below all day long.

Dirt!

When we pulled out the old rusting ductwork from the closets, not only did it leave huge gaping holes in the walls, but it also left all kinds of dust crumbles and probably, asbestos, maybe. What a mess!!

That patched hole used to be a vent into the dining area

If we were just renovating this house and I wasn’t also living in it I wouldn’t have to be quite so thorough with the cleaning, but I am and I’m a bit OCD so I clean for hours a day.

Today the HVAC guys came and finished the job. They put on the remaining vent covers and installed Nest Thermostats, the only thing left to do is hook the units up to power and test em out. Unfortunately, we can’t do that until we upgrade the electrical panels to a 200 amp service. Currently we have 100 amp for the entire duplex, and it’s just not enough to be able to power these massive units which will provide both AC and heat.  The electrical panels are very old and need replacing so we’ve been getting quotes on upgrading to new panels with 200 amp service and replacing all of the old, and dangerous, knob and tube wiring throughout the entire house. This is most likely going to involve cutting holes in the walls everywhere we want a power outlet to run the new lines. The project coordinator for the power company came out with one of the companies that is giving us a bid and explained what boxes we needed, where they can be placed ( we want to move one box so each box is on the side of the house it powers), and basically gave a green light to proceed with getting permits. It’s a lengthy process that I should have initiated on day 1 when we officially took ownership had I known better. The process could take 2-6 weeks depending on the power company’s availability to come out and drop the lines to the roof.  We’re definitely going to investigate getting solar panels on the roof if we can find a company to lease them from.  If anyone in Phoenix has any knowledge about solar please let me know in the comment or send me a private message. Thanks!

We also got the last living room window framed and installed and pulled out both front doors and installed new ones. Two hours of cleaning and it’s a wrap!  I may attempt to do some demo in the kitchens and bathrooms this weekend…or I might need an additional day to recharge.
