Day 21 and 22: More Demo More Mess and Finally Drywall

Been getting electrical work done the past few days and getting everything ready to drywall the place. A couple of discoveries and finally visible progress.

We had to rip out all of the baseboards, crown molding, and anything still attached to the walls like shelves, and stuff. While cleaning up the closet in Unit 1 we discovered that the shelving in the bathroom was built too far into the closet, maybe it was initially a way to reach your clothing from the bathroom after a shower. I also ripped out the weird shelving in the closet that housed the old ductwork and found this myster pile of stuff, it appears to be rusted metal, insulation, and dirt. Ugh!

With everything cleaned up for the drywallers, they began patching our walls. It was exciting to see the walls being rebuilt! They put new drywall on the ceiling and I finally started to see what this place might actually look like when complete.

Then today drywall starts taping and joint compounding. I was out of the house all day to let them do their thing while working on installing new bamboo flooring in the Triplex. I’ll save that for a different post (hopefully).

Part of the reason for no posts is, I finally moved everything out of the duplex and I spent the night at the Triplex with running water, heat, and shower! The new HVAC system we installed in the Triplex with the Nest thermostat worked amazingly! Oh, so I had no internet in the Triplex, but as of today we have working internet and cable.

Later in the day I stopped by the duplex to make sure everything was going smoothly and it was! The drywall guys tried to talk us into doing textured walls because they feared the walls would look wavy, but after an inspection of their progress and the current state of work I felt that things will look good when they are complete. We really want smooth walls and we are willing to accept a little bit of wave, but we are paying for 3 layers of skim coating the wall with plaster to even things out and are confident we will be happy with the results. They assured me that they will make it look good. They have a few more days of work, and hopefully they will be done so we can do interior paint and new baseboards on Friday, fingers crossed.

I also need to visit LA this weekend to move our stuff and the dogs down to the triplex. Hopefully we can get some furniture in on Thursday. It’s all starting to come together!
